Bored at work? Why not take a second to send an email to President Obama, your state senators and representatives urging them to repeal the Defense of Marriage Act?
DOMA was signed into law by Bill Clinton in 1996. The bill says that the federal government defines marriage as being only between a man and a woman, and no state is required to treat any same-sex relationship as a “marriage” even if it was considered a legal marriage some place else.
In other words, while a few individual states have made it possible for same-sex couples to legally marry, DOMA prevents those marriages from being recognized at a federal level.
